| I first saw Jimi Lee perform about 4 years ago at Babe's on 6th
Street in Austin when he had a full band backing him up. Since that
time, whenever I need a Blues "fix," I find out where Jimi Lee is playing
and head out.
When I heard that Jimi Lee was going to compete in the San Antonio Blues Society competition for the chance to represent Texas in Memphis at the International Blues Challenge, I was in my car heading south. For me, it was a "no-brainer" since I would get to hear Jimi Lee and get to listen to some of the best Texas Blues artists too. When I arrived, I ran into Jimi Lee who told me that he was screwed since there was no "solo" category so he would have to go on stage BY HIMSELF and compete against FULL BANDS. As we talked, I could sort of see him transitioning from "I got no chance" to "I can win this thing!" AND WIN IT HE DID! While Jimi Lee's 20-minute set was outstanding, his closing jam session leading the other band members was some of the best music I have ever heard. Whether he wins, loses or draws in Memphis...he earned the title and will make Texas proud!
